ICoE-Coast Partners

Center for GIS and Remote Sensing (CGRS), Department of Geography: The CGRS has a strong GIScience mission with research focus on data-driven spatial modeling and visualization for innovative solutions to address environmental and societal challenges. The CGRS affiliates with the Campus GIS Program that provides support for GIS software, instruction and research across the campus. Director: Dr. Cuizhen (Susan) Wang.

Hazards & Vulnerability Research Institute (HVRI): An interdisciplinary research center focused on the development of theory, data, metrics, methods, applications, and spatial analytical models for understanding hazard vulnerability and resilience science. Through outreach activities, HVRI facilitates local, state, and federal government efforts to improve emergency preparedness, response, and recovery HVRI also houses the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk’s (IRDR) International Center of Excellence on Vulnerability and Resilience Metrics (IRDR ICoE-VaRM) under the auspices of ICSU, ISSC and UNISDR. Director: Dr. Susan Cutter

NOAA NERRS Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO): Baruch Institute (Georgetown, SC): The CDMO has the priority area of the continuation and advancement of the system-wide data and information management of the NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS). The purpose of CDMO is to manage the basic infrastructure and data protocol to support the collection, assimilation and exchange of field measurements, metadata and information within the framework of NERRS sites. Director: Dr. Dwayne Porter

Wind-Induced Nearshore Dynamics Lab (WIND) Lab, Department of Geography: co-led by Dr. Jean Ellis and April Hiscox. This lab provides facilities and equipment in support of teaching and research in field-based coastal science and near-surface atmospheric processes.

GISciences Research Laboratory, Department of Geography: Led by Dr. Michael Hodgson, this lab has conducted environmental/hazard research projects and developed web and mobile applications and web-based geodatabase server deployments (e.g.,, and

Geoinformation and Big Data Research Lab (GIBD), Department of Geography: Led by Dr. Zhenlong Li, this lab focuses on geospatial big data processing and analytics, high-performance computing, and geospatial cyberinfrastructure/CyberGIS within the area of data and computational intensive GISciences.

Geographic Information Processing Lab (GIP), Environmental Health Sciences, Arnold School of Public Health: Led by Dr. Dwayne Porter, the GIP Lab supports geospatial research on modeling, assessing, and managing our environmental resources for public health and environmental justice. The GIP Lab maintains spatial databases from various sources available to researchers, students, and resource managers

Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China

Key Laboratory of Earth Observation, Hainan Province, China: With the support of Sanya Institute of Remote Sensing (SIRS) and the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Key Laboratory of Earth Observation, Hainan Province was founded with the approval of the Hainan Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2014. With its goal of “basing itself in Hainan, serving South China, covering the South China Sea and radiating towards Southeast Asia”, and its research direction targeting earth observation theories on the land, sea and atmosphere factors in tropical and subtropical zones, space information extraction methods, and “Digital Hainan” key technologies and application demonstration, the Lab is faced with such important needs as the national ocean development strategy, construction of an international tourism island in Hainan, construction of the Maritime Silk Road, and ASEAN science and technology diplomacy strategy, carries out the research of earth observation theories and cutting-edge technologies in the tropical and subtropical zones, the integrated experimental research of the aerospace earth observation system, the research of remote sensing of resources and environment, ocean, and natural disasters, and provides digital space information services concerning the ocean, environment, resources and disasters, etc.
